| The History of Tokyo Jogakkan |
Tokyo Jogakkan was founded in 1888 (21st year, Meiji era) as a school
for the promotion of education for women. At the time, the Meiji Restoration
had come to an end, and Japan actively sought to internalize Western culture
in order to become modernized. One of the methods to facilitate this was
to provide women with a high level of education that would make them acceptable
in a global setting; thus, the "Joshi Kyoiku Shorei-kai" (Committee for
the Promotion of Education for Women) was founded. Tokyo Jogakkan opened
its doors as the educational institution administered by the "Joshi Kyoiku
Shorei-kai." |
